Lover of fashion, passionate about personal image, and former fashion executive now dedicated to assisting professional women level up!
There comes a time in every woman’s life when her closet just stops working for her. (You know that feeling – and it’s the worst.) Nothing fits, nothing flatters, and there’s no excitement in picking an outfit. You’re stuck returning to the same outfits that just barely work for her, while dreaming of so much more. Whether it’s due to a major lifestyle change, a personal transition, or simply feeling out of sync, it’s important to address this shift with grace and practicality. So let’s talk about navigating your wardrobe disconnect: three steps to reconnect with your style!
My friend, if this sounds familiar – I promise that it’s possible to turn this around! You have to learn to embrace your evolving style. You’re constantly evolving as a woman and in all of the roles you have in your life. So why shouldn’t your style evolve with you?
I’ll be honest, there have been some tough days over the last few years with my closet. I’ve opened the doors more than once and realized that everything in there represents someone who I’m not anymore. As I’ve navigated cancer, motherhood, entrepreneurship, and more, I’ve had to implement all three of these steps more than once to recalibrate my relationship to my style. And you know that I wouldn’t give you advice that I wouldn’t take myself. Let’s get into it!
When you find yourself feeling disconnected from your wardrobe, resist the urge to shop impulsively. Instead, take a step back and give yourself some space. Maybe you need to get through your week, or have some important events. Try to put together a few simple outfits that’ll serve you for now! Focus on essentials, and don’t feel the need to make sweeping changes immediately.
In the meantime, take a second to reflect on any major shifts happening in your life. Ask yourself, “how do want this new version of myself to show up in the world?” Consider how you want to look, feel, and be perceived by others. You’ll be making choices that align with your current identity in no time!
Acknowledge your body as it is today. Don’t skip out on recognizing its worth! Regardless of any changes or challenges you’ve faced, you deserve to look and feel great every day. (And remember – your body has gotten you through all of those changes and challenges!) As someone who has swung between various sizes, I know from experience that honoring your body and choosing the right garments is crucial to leveling up how you show up.
Remember, clothing is the largest part of your visual communication—about 75% of first impressions are based on appearance, not words. Want to show your body that you think it’s worth it? Invest your time and resources into finding garments and accessories that make you feel confident and stylish, no matter your size. Don’t wait to lose weight to shop – invest in your body NOW.
Create a wardrobe capsule that reflects your authentic self. Start with foundational pieces that are versatile and timeless! If you’re on a budget, focus on high-quality basics and classic accessories. Think studs, hoops, a great watch, and a nice pendant necklace. These items can elevate any outfit and make you look pulled together, even if you’re keeping it casual!
When I was a new mom with twins and a young child, I invested in key accessories that helped me look polished even on my busiest days. These items didn’t have to be expensive—just well-chosen and versatile. And I looked like I had it together in the carpool line every time, even if I was just in a t-shirt!
These three steps are designed to help you cultivate a personal style that resonates with your authentic self and enhances your professional image. By taking time to reflect, honor your body, and build a classic wardrobe, you’ll feel more confident and stylish every day! (Need a guide as you find your way back to your authentic style?
