If you think that you’re the only one that looks in the mirror while getting dressed every morning and says to herself, “This is not it!” – trust me, my friend, it’s not just you. As many professional women start returning to the office, we have a very important question on our minds: “Am I dressed appropriately?”
When you get dressed in the morning, there are 3 very important questions you should ask yourself:
Where am I going? (To the office? Taking Zoom meetings? On a business trip?)
Who am I going to see? (It could be your boss, your staff, or even a potential business partner.)
What type of image do I want to project? (Powerful, trustworthy, and confident!)
Remember that your professional style can be used as a strategy to position you for success. But you have to put in the work and develop a plan to ensure you’re sending the right message! Post-pandemic, professional women who once rocked amazing styles around the office are no longer as confident in their daily choices! And there are a handful of reasons why…
Here are 4 reasons why you’re not getting dressed appropriately for the office:
The dress codes have relaxed. You’re not sure how to tailor down your business look and still have a presence of authority.
You’ve gotten out of the routine of getting dressed every day. You could also be resisting the fact that Covid is over!
Your wardrobe is out of date and/or is filled with ill-fitting clothes. When you go to get dressed in the morning, you have nothing to wear that you’re excited about!
You changed or made a shift during the pandemic. You feel like nothing in your closet properly represents who you are now. So your mornings are filled with stress as you try to create outfits that make you look the part!
This applies whether you’re going into the office every day or have a hybrid work situation. But don’t worry my friend, I’m here to help! It’s important for you to show up as the polished professional that we both know you are!
Here are 3 things you can do immediately to start:
Define your company’s current dress code. Is it Traditional Business, Business Casual, or Relaxed Business Casual? During the pandemic, many companies relaxed their dress codes. Therefore, if you wear the traditional business suit – you are doing too much! Not comfortable wearing jeans to the office? Invest in relaxed suiting separates in non-traditional suiting fabrics like cotton and linen. Consider wearing nice tank tops underneath blazers instead of formal blouses to relax your look.
Invest in a capsule wardrobe! Let’s say you’re in the office 50% of the time and working from home the other 50% of the time. We can say that your office has a traditional business dress code. You should fill 50% of your capsule wardrobe with tailored suits, blouses, and pumps. The other half should be filled with Zoom-ready tops and jeans, and elevated loungewear.
