When was the last time you really looked at everything hanging in your closet? If it has been a while, there may be 5 signs it’s time to update your closet that you have been overlooking. Your wardrobe should evolve as your life, body, career, and personal style evolve.
Think about it. You probably have a handful of pieces hanging in the front that you reach for over and over again. But what about everything else?
Some of those clothes may no longer fit. Others may feel dated or belong to a lifestyle you no longer live. And then there are those pieces you keep passing over because, for whatever reason, they simply don’t feel like you anymore.
That doesn’t mean you need to run out and buy an entirely new wardrobe.
Sometimes, you simply need to take a good look at what you already own, clear out what is no longer serving you, and identify what is missing.
Your wardrobe should keep up with the woman you are today.
Here are five signs yours may be ready for an update.
Your wardrobe should support the life you actually live.
Maybe you received a promotion and need to elevate your professional image. Perhaps your workplace is more casual now. You could also be traveling more, attending different events, or entering an entirely new chapter.
Whatever has changed, your wardrobe needs to keep up.
Take an honest look at your calendar. Where are you going? Who are you seeing? What image do you want to project when you get there?
Now look at your closet.
Do you have what you need for the life you’re living today?
If the answer is no, it’s time for an update.
Your closet should support your current lifestyle, not the one you had five years ago.
You know the feeling.
Your closet is packed, but you still stand there in the morning thinking, I have nothing to wear.
Usually, you don’t need more clothes.
Instead, you may have too many random pieces that don’t work together. Some items may be outdated. Others may no longer fit your lifestyle or personal style.
A good closet edit can change that.
Start paying attention to what you actually wear. Which pieces make getting dressed easy? What do you constantly skip over?
Next, look at how well everything works together. A functional wardrobe should give you plenty of outfit options without requiring a closet overflowing with clothes.
The goal isn’t to have more clothes. The goal is to have the right clothes.
This is a big one, and I know it personally.
Our bodies change.
I have been several different sizes throughout my life. One thing I’ve learned is that staring at clothes that don’t fit does absolutely nothing for your confidence.
Dress the body you have today.
If something doesn’t fit, move it out of your primary closet. You don’t necessarily have to get rid of it immediately. However, the clothes you see every morning should give you options you can actually wear.
Your wardrobe should fit properly, flatter your body, and make you feel good when you walk out the door.
Please remember this too: great style has no age or size limit.
You deserve to look good now. Not ten pounds from now. Not next year.
Now.
There is a difference between having timeless style and simply looking dated.
You don’t need to replace your entire wardrobe every season. You certainly don’t need to follow every fashion trend.
However, you do want to look current.
Sometimes a few strategic wardrobe updates can completely change the way your existing clothes look.
An updated pair of trousers could do it. Maybe you need a modern shoe, new denim, a great jacket, or a beautiful handbag. Even changing how you style something you already own can make a difference.
This is where knowing your personal style becomes important.
Not every trend belongs in your closet.
Choose the updates that work for your body, lifestyle, taste level, and personal image.
The goal isn’t trendy. The goal is current.
This may be the most important sign of all.
Sometimes your clothes still fit. They aren’t necessarily outdated either. In fact, there may be absolutely nothing wrong with them.
They just don’t feel like you anymore.
Pay attention to that feeling.
As you grow personally and professionally, your image should grow with you. The way you present yourself communicates something before you ever say a word.
Ask yourself three questions:
Does my wardrobe reflect who I am today?
Does my image support where I’m going?
Do I feel confident when I walk out the door?
If something feels disconnected, it may be time to make a change.
Your personal style is an extension of who you are. Make sure it reflects the woman you are now and supports the woman you are becoming.
Go take a look.
Pull out the pieces you haven’t worn. Try on the clothes you’re unsure about. Pay attention to what fits, what feels good, and what looks current.
Then look for the gaps.
What do you actually need?
Make that list before you start shopping.
You probably don’t need an entirely new wardrobe. Instead, you need a wardrobe that works harder for you.
When your closet reflects your body, lifestyle, personal style, and goals, getting dressed becomes so much easier.
And that is exactly how it should be.
If you’ve realized that your closet no longer represents the woman you are today, don’t ignore it. It’s time to do something about it!
